Havening
Hey friend ๐ If youโre feeling frazzled, wired, or just need a little extra softness, havening (a.k.a. self-soothing touch) is here for you. Itโs like giving your nervous system a big, warm, hug! Simple, powerful, and oh-so-gentle.
What is Havening? (and why it works!)
Havening uses gentle, repetitive touch on specific areas (your arms, face, or hands) to create calming delta waves in your brain. It helps your nervous system shift out of stress and into safety, lowering anxiety and giving you a sense of comfort and regulation. Basically? Itโs self-soothing magic.
When to use this tool:
When anxiety or overwhelm spikes
After emotional conversations
When you need comfort but donโt have someone to hold you
Before bed to help unwind
How to do it:
Cross your forearms over your chest and place your hands on your upper arms.
Softly stroke your arms in a downward motion, from shoulder to elbow. Repeat slowly and rhythmically.
You can also gently rub your palms together or stroke the sides of your face.
Breathe deeply and imagine wrapping yourself in safety and kindness.
Repeat until you feel your body soften.
Pro tip:
Whisper kind phrases to yourself as you do this, like โIโve got you.โ or โWeโre safe now.โ It makes the magic even stronger. Your inner child is always listening โ you can be the safe adult they need.
